Sandstone Mayor Carl Steffen died unexpectedly on Tuesday following a massive coronary on Saturday night. Steffen was taken to Essentia Health Sandstone, where he was immediately airlifted to St. Mary's in Duluth. He remained in critical condition until the time of his death.
Steffen, who was just beginning his second term of mayor for the city of Sandstone, was very loved and active in the community following his retirement from the Minnesota State Patrol, where he was involved with the K9 unit. Right before he retired eight years ago, he was chosen to be part of the inauguration security at our nation's capital.
Along with serving as mayor, Steffen was currently the president of the Sandstone Lions Club. He was also a very active member at Grace Lutheran Church in Sandstone. Carl, along with his wife, Bev, were also very active with East Central Schools, chaperoning several band trips. The last several years, Steffen also actively participated in the fall plays landing large roles, in which many in the community appreciated. His two most recent roles, ironically, were being the mayor of the towns in last two productions. He told friends jokingly he was being "type cast" for his roles. Carl loved the people of the community and greatly enjoyed serving, always going above and beyond what was asked of him.
As of Tuesday morning, funeral details were pending but it was likely the funeral will be held at the East Central High School due to the high attendance expected.
